It sounds like an icky reason, but possibly occurred due to the maker's good eco intentions. Here's what to toss or return.

A Popular Makeup Palette Was Just Recalled by a National Chain

Even when life shifted to video meetings, a quick minute of eye makeup application is an easy way to add some oomph to your look.
However, as with any product that goes near your eyes, it’s important to be mindful. Certain cosmetics contain chemicals that can irritate the eye or the skin around it, and even when while you clean your makeup brushes or purchase only clean products, there can be issues with the product that are out of your control.
A prime example? The eyeshadow palette that was just recalled by CVS for possible contamination.
On March 12, CVS announced a recall of The Crème Shop X Pusheen Strawberry Daydream eyeshadow palette. The palette, which is said to be vegan and cruelty-free, contains nine shadows that include neutrals and shades of pink. It’s a collaboration between makeup brand The Crème Shop and Pusheen, a popular cartoon tabby cat that is featured on the product’s exterior (though product packaging may vary).
The reason for the recall is perhaps a little cringey: The CVS announcement stated, “The Manufacturer is voluntarily recalling product due to potential mold.”
The following details can help identify the affected product:
- Product SKU: 607331
- Product UPC: 19763800413
It’s unclear how many units have been affected, but the announcement indicates that “all lots” are involved in the recall.
While the recall notice did not elaborate on how the mold may have contaminated the products, there are a few known reasons for mold growth on makeup. It can be the result of improper storage, dirty brushes or other applicators, or simply age. But it could also be due to its formula. “Sometimes mold formation could be the result of a wrong product formulation in which case the responsibility lies with the manufacturer rather than the consumer,” Luisa Fanzani, a cosmetic chemist and founder of Luisa True Skincare, explained to Forbes in 2022.
Also, a brand-name shampoo recall earlier this year revealed how a lack of preservatives in clean-ingredient products can also allow the development of microbes and pathogens. While we’re conscious of what we consume for the sake of our health and the planet, sometimes it’s still not a perfect approach.
The Mayo Clinic advises that moldy makeup could cause acne breakouts and other skin irritations. It’s also worth noting that, unlike mold you might see on old bread, mold on makeup products isn’t always visible to the human eye.
Customers who purchased the Crème Shop X Pusheen Strawberry Daydream eyeshadow palette “should immediately discontinue use of it,” CVS’s announcement reads. They add that refunds are available upon return of the item.
