There might be a “new” Mediterranean diet, but chickpeas are classically considered one of the best foods to lengthen your lifespan, as well as one of the “perfect” proteins. That’s just one reason that when you’re plating up veggies or another hand-held snack, hummus is arguably the dip most health experts would recommend.

But with increased sensitivity around food labels, it’s also important to find a store-bought hummus without preservatives—which, with as many hummus manufacturers as they are these days, can be a challenge. Meanwhile, as far as hummus contents go, consumers at three major grocery chains may have discovered an unwanted ingredient in recent weeks.

An initial recall announcement for 12 flavors of King Harvest hummus was published by both Kroger and the King Harvest company on February 5 out of “an abundance of caution.” Today an update from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) now reinforces that earlier concerns about a possible manufacturing defect were spot-on. It also reveals how many hummus containers this issue affected.

Previously, the manufacturer for King Harvest hummus, Pacific Coast Fresh Company, posted information—which was linked to from the King Harvest website—about the recall, explaining “Due to being informed of a manufacturing defect on the plastic tub from our supplier … This defect could potentially cause a plastic foreign object in the product.” In other words, it seems the containers the hummus is sold in had a defect that could cause plastic to break off and end up inside the product.

On March 4, the FDA elaborated that the recall reason was for “plastic fragments.” The agency assigned a Class II label to the recall, meaning the affected products could “cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.”

The FDA also confirms the recalled hummus was distributed in three states: Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

All recalled flavors were sold in 10-ounce (oz) containers, though the FDA seems to refer to them as “cups.” The products, totaling 70,987 containers, are listed as “perishable and refrigerated, packed in sealed plastic tub and lid” with the following details:

The original Kroger announcement in February suggested the affected hummus had been sold in Fred Meyer and QFC grocery store locations. The King Harvest company’s website indicates their products are also sold at Whole Foods, Safeway, and New Seasons Market locations, among others.

Though the expiration dates for all hummus items have now passed, it is a good idea to make sure any lingering containers aren’t still in your refrigerator. At the time of the initial recall notice, Kroger’s website suggested customers return the product to the original store for a refund, while the Pacific Coast Fresh Company told consumers to destroy the product and request a refund from the retail store.
