Not long after the Walmart Great Value bakery recall was announced comes news of a recall on another widely distributed carb, this one often enjoyed with healthier fare—namely, soup; in particular seafood chowders if that’s your thing on Lenten Fridays.

But perhaps especially since these are sometimes also an easy snack for little ones, households will want to be aware. A Tuesday update from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shows an update to a recall apparently first executed in February because of “Potential foreign material (stainless steel wire).”

It affects at least 185,760 total bags of soup and oyster crackers sold at Walmart, Target, Giant Eagle, and other possible retail locations in the following 24 states: Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Based on a brief online search, the recalled crackers appear to still be available to purchase from certain retailers while potentially removed already from others. In addition, the VISTA-branded crackers appear to be typically sold at a variety of grocery stores.

One common application for stainless steel wire is in food-processing equipment, which inspectors have lately seen break off into food, resulting in recalls. The recall was updated Tuesday as a Class II, meaning the recall “involves products that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health effects.”

The recalling firm is listed as Shearer’s Foods, LLC, in Massillon, OH. The Shearer’s Food website says they produce “both national brand equivalent and value quality crackers,” and are certified under the Global Food Safety Initiatives.

Though Walmart, Target, and Giant Eagle do not have recall notices for the products on their websites as of Wednesday morning, with these active expiration windows it’s advisable not to consume the products and to attempt returning them to your place of purchase.
