Sandwiches Recalled in 2 States for Potential “Life-Threatening” Risk

Weekday mornings are tough. While we can manage to grab a cup of coffee and start our commute to work, packing lunches—and remembering to actually bring them with us—might fall through the cracks. So it’s no wonder that 71% of corporate workers in the U.S. purchase lunch three times a week, according to a 2023 survey.
Unfortunately for those who opt for a quick bite, one kind of sandwich is being recalled for a possible severe health risk.
On Thursday, the FDA announced the recall of premade chicken salad sandwiches from CFS Cromer Food Services, Inc. in two states. The company behind the lunchtime staple, Cromer Food Services, Inc., initiated the recall of “chicken salad on white bread” due to undeclared milk. Milk is typically found in cream-based chicken salad recipes, but is also one of the major food allergens.
The notice states, “These products were packaged in clear plastic and sold primarily in Micro Markets and Vending Machines located in the States of Georgia and South Carolina.” Though not specified in the announcement, Cromer Food products are sold in workplace breakrooms in Cromer Corner locations in Greenville, Spartanburg, and Anderson, South Carolina, as noted on the company’s website. It’s unclear where else Cromer Food products are sold.
Sandwiches affected by this recall were sold between December 26 and March 24 with the UPC 31166 or 13172. The product’s packaging features the date code on either the left or right side of the bar code and the UPC beneath that same bar code. The sandwiches, which have a size of 4.3 oz, also have a use-by date that ranges from January 3 to April 4.
Food products with undeclared milk can potentially cause a “serious or life-threatening allergic reaction” in people who are allergic or sensitive to milk, as noted by the FDA recall notice. According to the Cleveland Clinic, common milk allergy symptoms include hives, abdominal pain, rash, difficulty breathing, and even anaphylaxis, which could be fatal.
As of this writing, there have not been any illnesses caused by the product.
Consumers in possession of one of the recalled items are encouraged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or simply dispose of the sandwich. They can also contact Cromer Food Services, Inc. at 1-800-922-3174, where staff is available 24/7.
