Start spreading the news: If the tart cream cheese tang of cheesecake is a treat for your tastebuds, heads-up that an unexpected ingredient made it into a food producer’s batch, and today the manufacturer is doing damage control. Target consumers with a certain allergy will want to avoid it.

Wednesday night, PR Newswire went live with an announcement that “Dessert Holdings LLC is recalling Target brand Favorite Day Gourmet New York Style Cheesecake … due to product mislabeling resulting in undeclared pecans.”

They say the product label did not list the pecans, but on March 14 they received a customer complaint about the apparent inclusion of the ingredient. No illnesses have been reported, Dessert Holdings LLC says, though adding: “People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to pecans run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products.” Tree nuts are among the major known food allergens.

It’s reported the product was distributed to Target Distribution Centers in California, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas between February 14 and March 7 of this year. It’s unclear whether it was shipped beyond those state lines.

Identifying details for the recalled cheesecake are the following:

  • Sold in clear plastic clamshell containers
  • Six-ounce, two-count units
  • Lot code  25028A1 000039133
  • UPC 0 85239 09690 1

This is yet another reminder that if you’re serving anybody with a food sensitivity, including yourself, be aware that undeclared ingredients is one of the most common reasons for food recalls to occur. The notice advises that customers “should not consume the product” and instead contact Target or the manufacturer via the details listed in the PR Newswire link.
